2012 Kawasaki KLX140L Review
Going from minibike to a full-sized machine can sometimes be a tricky transition. And for novices, making that jump can be difficult indeed. But now there’s a motorcycle that bridges the gap nicely – Kawasaki’s KLX™140L. Featuring 19” front and 16” rear wheels fitted to the standard-spec KLX140, the L-model is the ideal machine for more experienced or longer-limbed fans of smaller displacement machines. And with its more performance-oriented, reservoir-equipped rear shock, there’s plenty of performance for everyone. As always, the standard KLX – with 17” front / 14” rear wheels – is a first-rate option for novices and smaller riders.

A Capable Dirtbike for Fun and Adventure
Taller riders will appreciate the KLX™140L, which features taller wheels – 19” front and 16 rear – than a standard-spec KLX140. It incorporates all of the virtues of the standard 140, including an engine that provides a steady flow of power that new and seasoned riders will enjoy. The 140L model is equipped with a more performance-oriented, reservoir-equipped shock, because it’s popular with a larger, more experienced crowd. Of course, the standard KLX – with 17” front and 14” rear wheels – is still a great option for novices and smaller riders.
Bringing the KLX 140L to life is as simple as pressing the power switch and thumbing the start button. The power switch includes an internal LED to remind riders when the ignition is on, and preventing dead batteries. The powerful 144cc engine is easy to manage via a manual clutch and a five-speed, close ratio transmission. And a progressive clutch means that younger and beginning riders can more easily get the hang of shifting and clutch use; its progressive nature also means half-clutch can be used at extremely low speeds. The clutch also offers a more direct feel and more durability.
The KLX’s high-revving, smooth and surprisingly quiet engine is wrapped in a high-tensile steel perimeter frame covered by KX™-like shrouds, a two-tone seat cover and sharp, aggressive body work. The 140’s roomy cockpit, overall control layout and narrow footpeg/frame relationship – including wide, comfortable footpegs – make it easy for riders to move around with minimal effort.

A 33mm telescopic fork featuring custom-tuned spring rate and damping settings handles suspension duty up front. In back, a UNI-TRAK® linkage equipped rear shock featuring 5-way preload adjustability and a remote reservoir provides a high degree of wheel control, and is adaptable to the smaller-wheeled, standard-spec KLX140 for added performance.
Lightweight RK EXCEL aluminum rims and advanced braking components are another sign this is a serious off-road motorcycle. A large 220mm front disc and 27mm twin-piston caliper at the front and 186mm rear disc provide serious stopping power. Both utilize petal shaped rotors, which help clean the brakes and reduce unsprung weight for better wheel control.
Bottom line? The KLX140L delivers an ideal blend of size and performance, all of which equals Big Fun for kids and adults alike.

- Rear brake uses a 186mm petal disc gripped by a 27mm single-piston caliper
- Rear brake master cylinder features a large-volume, unitized reservoir that contributes to stable braking and helps ensure sufficient fluid pressure even when the brake pad wears down
- In addition to helping reduce unsprung weight, the wave shapes of the petal discs help clean the brake pads for more efficient braking performance

Ergonomics
- Combination of the flat surface of the frame’s box-section, long footpegs mounted close to the bikes’ centerline and no kick-start lever add up to good grip and a high level of machine control
- Footpeg/frame relationship is modeled after the KX line for maximum leg grip
- Handlebar is rubber-mounted for reduced vibration transferred to the rider’s hands
- Two-piece upper triple clamp and handle clamp foster easy aftermarket handlebar installation
- Raised pattern on half of the grip surface offers more control and comfort
- Two-tone seat cover has a slip-resistant top surface for good grip when seated and smooth sides for excellent rider mobility when standing

2012 Kawasaki KLX140 Review
Describing the KLX™140 in one term is easy: multi-talented. And with its mid-sized stature, flexible engine and easy-to-ride nature, Kawasaki’s 2012 KLX™140 is the kind of versatile machine that can fit a variety of riders. Smaller riders will love the KLX’s physical size – a touch larger than a typical minibike – and push-button starting, while those a bit taller will appreciate the larger-wheeled KLX140L, which features a 19” front and 16” rear wheel in place of the standard KLX’s 17” front and 14” rear wheels. Both 140s are friendly to beginners and novices, yet both offer a roomy cockpit and enough performance and handling prowess to keep more advanced riders smiling.
The Fun, Friendly, Multi-talented Dirt Companion
The multi-talented KLX™140 features an easy-to-handle size that will delight newer riders, while its engine provides a steady flow of power that both new and seasoned riders can enjoy. Riders of all stripes will find something to love about this compact dirt bike, whether it’s the straightforward push-button starting, or its slightly larger than a “pit” bike size. Cracking a smile will be inevitable, no matter a rider’s level of experience.
Bringing the KLX to life is as simple as pressing the power switch and thumbing the start button. The power switch includes an internal LED to remind riders when the ignition is on, and preventing dead batteries. The powerful 144cc engine is easy to manage via a manual clutch and a five-speed, close ratio transmission. The 140’s roomy cockpit, overall control layout and narrow footpeg/frame relationship – including wide and comfortable footpegs – make it easy for riders to move around while aboard with a minimum of effort.
A 33mm telescopic fork featuring custom-tuned spring rate and damping settings handles suspension duties up front. In back, a UNI-TRAK® linkage equipped rear shock featuring 5-way preload adjustability provides a smooth and controlled ride. To provide even greater options for growing riders, the KLX140L’s more advanced, reservoir-equipped shock easily fits the standard KLX140.
The KLX140 delivers an ideal blend of size and performance, all of which equals Big Fun for kids and adults alike.

2012 Kawasaki KLX110L Review
The standard KLX110 – with its reliable four-stroke engine, automatic-clutch drivetrain and electric, push-button starter – is much-loved by kids, beginners and adults for its unreal fun-factor and riding ease. But to expand the KLX110’s envelope a bit – make it even more accessible to even more riders – Kawasaki developed the KLX110L, which incorporates features designed to appeal to a slightly larger, slightly more advanced rider – along with all those adults who love riding the little green bikes.
Taller Suspension and Manual Clutch Expand the Possibilities
The standard, shorter, KLX™110, with its reliable four-stroke engine, automatic-clutch drivetrain and easy to use push-button starter, is beloved by children and adults alike. Building on the wide appeal of the KLX110, the KLX110L takes a good thing and enhances it even further. The L-model incorporates several key features that make it accessible to an even wider range of riders, allowing those slightly larger, slightly more experienced riders to climb aboard and enjoy the smile-producing euphoria of these little green thumpers.
The L-model is slightly taller than the standard 110, due to its 2.4-inch longer fork that has 5.5 inches of travel and a longer shock out back, which offers 5.2 inches of wheel travel. This results in a seat height of 28.7 inches – nearly 2 inches higher than that of the standard KLX110. Naturally, the suspension comes with optimal spring and damping settings, giving those slightly larger riders the ability to push the KLX110L as hard as they choose.
More experienced riders often demand the superior control of a manual clutch, so the KLX110L gets one to complement its four-speed gearbox. This combination lets more aggressive riders wring every drop of performance from the 111cc four-stroke engine. Convenient push-button electric starting helps make the KLX110L easily accessible to a wide range of riders.

The Kawasaki design team outfitted the KLX110L with a fuel tank, seat, side panels, shrouds and fenders that mimic the race winning KX™450F’s. An MX-style seat is part of the package, along with a handlebar shape optimized to provide excellent comfort and control to a wide variety of riders. In other words, this one’s for kids of all ages.

2012 Kawasaki KLX110 Review
Parents may buy the KLX™110 for their children, but once they find out how fun it is, they may be competing for seat time with their little ones. And it’s easy to see why: The little KLX is simply a blast to ride, packing the sort of confidence-inspiring and easy-to-access performance that makes kids, beginners and more experienced riders grin within their helmets all day long.

A Minibike for Kids and Adults Alike

Though the KLX™110 is bought for “the kids”, adults always seem to discover just how much fun it is. Next thing you know… they’re sneaking seat time from their little ones. The KLX has many grin-inducing properties, including its confidence-inspiring performance and accessibility to young people and grownups alike. It’s easy to see why adults can’t stop riding them!
This versatile motorcycle makes it easy to get going with its push-button electric starting. Just in case, there’s a traditional kick-start lever for backup, but once riders get used to the magic button, they’re likely to forget all about it. The torquey 111cc four-stroke is easy to use. To make the KLX110 even more beginner-friendly, it’s equipped with Kawasaki’s automatic centrifugal clutch system, allowing easy no-clutch shifting. The semi-automatic gearbox boasts four speeds to access the KLX’s full spread of torque.
Optimum wheel and chassis control is a key factor with any beginner/kids bike, and the KLX obliges with quality suspension front and rear. A single shock with 4.3 inches of travel and plenty of bottoming resistance handles things out back, while a beefy, 30mm telescopic fork offering 4.3 inches of wheel travel tames the bumps up front. Tapered roller bearings at the bottom of the steering stem add durability.
With all these features it makes sense that the 2012 KLX110 mimics its KX™ cousins styling-wise. And that’s why the design team outfitted the bike in radical, KX-inspired bodywork: gas tank, seat, side panels, shrouds and fenders look as if they’re straight off the race winning KX450F. A comfortable, MX-style seat is part of the deal, along with a handlebar bend that gives a high degree of comfort and control to a wide variety of riders.
Comfort. Control. Surprising yet manageable power. Great looks. Legendary Kawasaki reliability. Push-button starting. And all this in a small, kid- and novice-friendly package. It’s no wonder adults and veterans love riding little KLX when the kids are tuckered out.
